“I’d like Saphia back on the stand. Ruthe, you may...” Kaa said. “I have a certain picture in my mind Ruthe, if you’d finish it’s rendering?” she told him

“After Saphia’s life was attempted on, Chief Darion extended security measures to her. Madame Rea and I visited her home, where we spoke...” Ruthe looked to Saphia, who took a deep breath before she told Kaa what she told us.

“Nor approached me with a proposition. He wanted to make sure Darion went punished and taken from power. I did not know exactly what his plan was, but I agreed to aid him. Then someone tried to kill me,” she said woodenly.

“Lies!” Nor shouted, then jumped up from his seat. Several things happened at once. Darion shot out of his chair and several guards moved towards Nor. But Saphia wasn’t his target. Nor lunged at me and grabbed for my wrist. But Darion was suddenly there, shoving Nor back. The guards caught up with the action and seized the assassin. Nor was restrained by mean looking onyx cuffs, then he was dragged off, out of the room cursing Darion to hell and back.

“This trial, as well as the charges of honor killing and abduction, is nullified. Based on collusion, lack of true evidence, conviction, and ulterior motives of two key witnesses.” Kaa spoke the words lazily. She then signed another document and passed it around. Once it hit the record keeper’s desk, the council stood.

“Chief Darion, as far as the High Council is concerned. These grave charges have been dismissed,” Kaa said. The trial was called to a close and then I released a deep breath I hadn’t been aware I was holding. I touched Darion’s back and he turned around to face me.

“You got to me so fast...” I said, wide eyed.

“Letting him hurt you wasn’t an option,” he said. He caressed my chin and smiled. “We did it.”

“I need a drink and a long vacation,” I giggled.

“Don’t make that vacation too long Rea, I think now is the perfect time for me to transition into retirement,” Burton said from behind me. I glanced at him with a wide smile, then turned back to Darion excitedly.

“Chief Darion, if you’d meet with us in the private chamber please,” Kaa called Darion. She filed out of the room with the other council members. I glanced at Darion curiously. All he did was take a deep breath, then he let me go. That didn’t look reassuring at all.

  Chapter 11

  Darion

“WHAT IS IT? WHAT DO they want?” Rea asked. I took her hand and we followed the council. The private chamber was attached to the rear of the trial room.

“I’m not sure yet,” I told her in a low voice. Once we were all inside the womblike room, a guard shut us in. All the furniture was made of old wood and velvet and it smelled like an ages old library. The council sat at the conference table and Kaa gestured for us to have a seat.

“Chief Darion, though you’ve been excused from the charges brought against you. The mess that’s come of all this is substantial. Much of the public will not be satisfied that you leave here with the barest of punishments,” she began.

“I realize—” I began, but was cut off.

“Now that we’re off the record, let’s all agree that we know you were behind the murder,” another councillor, Naylen, said. I said nothing to his statement. Next to me, Rea glanced around the table in unease.

“The fact that this trial needed to be called and carried out is highly irregular for a Radonian Chief,” Kaa said.

“We recommend you step down,” Naylen said, his tone was grave.

“Step down?” Rea’s outburst was a slightly more intense version of what I would have said.

“Yes...it is only right given the circumstances. Honor killings are outlawed and not to be taken lightly. Just because Darion is Chief and the persecution was weak does not mean we simply brush murder aside. The assassin will have his punishment. But Darion, you must set an example for your people. Or else it will be the dark age all over again. People will talk, and there are already many who do not wish you to be Chief, as you have seen,” Kaa said passionately. She spoke to both Rea and I.

“I understand...” I murmured, after a long while of heavy silence.

“If he steps down he’ll basically admit to it,” Rea said.

“That is part of the consequence Chief Darion must bear,” Naylen answered.

“After you step down and the grace period is served, we may issue you invitation to re-join the council. Then perhaps, you may regain your rule if that is what you wish,” Kaa told me. I took a deep breath and forced the heaviness off my chest. Rea had taken my hand in hers and held on to me tight. I looked at her with an apologetic smile. The look she returned was filled with support and trust...and love.

“I understand and I will step down from my rule as Chief of Radon,” I said.

“We will prepare the appropriate documents. Once all is signed for government record, a public statement must be given,” Kaa said. It was the only time her tone was more personal and empathetic. “Three days,” she added.

“I will return then,” I assured them. After that there was nothing more to say. Rea and I stood, then we made our way out into the private hall. It was a back way into the chamber and trial room. We were the only two walking slowly down it.

“I didn’t...I didn’t think they’d make you step down. Though it makes sense now that it happened,” Rea said.

“I am actually okay with it,” I told her. She pulled me to a stop and we faced each other.

“Are you sure? I mean...you’re Chief,” she said.

“I have you,” I said simply. She gave me her brightest smile and tilted her head towards me for a soft kiss.

“No matter what, I’m glad I stayed,” she told me.

  “Me too,” I said, smiling.
